What to expect when you come for the first session

What is the aim of the initial assessment?

The purpose of the initial assessment is to understand the factors contributing to your pain. Once we understand what is driving the issue, we can create a plan to help you move more comfortably, regain confidence in your body, and get back to doing the things you enjoy.

What makes this assessment different from other approaches is the depth of analysis used to identify the underlying causes of your symptoms.

Most clients who come in for an assessment have already tried different approaches — osteopathy, physiotherapy, chiropractic work, yoga, massage, injections, or even surgery — often with temporary relief at best. As a result, it’s common for people to feel frustrated, confused, or beginning to feel like they may simply have to live with the problem long term.

During the session, we look at the deeper movement and lifestyle patterns contributing to your pain, so we can uncover why the issue keeps returning rather than simply chasing symptoms.

The goal is not just temporary pain relief, but helping you become stronger, more capable and more resilient over time.

What do we do during the initial assessment?

First, we’ll go through a detailed consultation discussing your background, injury history, symptoms, lifestyle, and the approaches you’ve already tried so far.

We’ll also look at broader lifestyle factors that may influence pain and recovery, such as sleep quality, stress levels, diet, hydration, and caffeine consumption.

Pain is rarely caused by just one thing, especially when it has been present for years. Often, it is the accumulation of movement habits, stress, compensation patterns, and lifestyle factors over time.

Next, we’ll carry out a posture and gait analysis. This means assessing how your body positions itself both statically and while moving.

This allows us to identify movement compensations and mechanical imbalances that may be contributing to your symptoms. For example:

For many people, this is the first time they begin to understand why their body has been feeling the way it has for so long.

Based on the findings, we’ll then perform targeted Functional Patterns myofascial release work and corrective exercises tailored specifically to your body.

Many clients notice improvements in body awareness, posture, balance, or movement quality even during the first session.

What happens afterwards?

Functional Patterns is designed for individuals who want to make meaningful long-term changes to how their body functions and feels. It is not intended as a quick fix.

The process requires consistency and commitment, but the reward is worth it: you’ll feel strong, comfortable and capable in your body again.

At the end of the session, we’ll discuss the findings from your assessment, outline the next steps, and create a plan tailored to your goals and needs, including recommended training frequency.

If you feel like you’ve tried everything and still haven’t found a lasting solution, the initial assessment is the first step toward understanding what’s really going on.
